Fact Sheet / Bio

Introduction
Wildland Adventures was founded in 1986 by president Kurt Kutay. The company offers authentic worldwide cultural and natural history explorations for active and inquisitive travelers.

Authenticity in Travel
At the core of Wildland Adventures is its commitment to authenticity. On a Wildland Adventures’ program, there are remarkably few barriers between visitors and local cultures, creating an authenticity in the way people travel and the places they encounter.

Destinations
Costa Rica · Panama · Belize · Guatemala · Peru and Bolivia · Ecuador and Galapagos · East Africa · Alaska · Southern Africa · Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) · Turkey · Egypt · Jordan · Morocco · New Zealand · Antarctica

Activities & Grades of Difficulty
Wildland Adventures’ activities are as diverse at the destinations it offers. Yet there is one commonality: authenticity. For its activities, the company uses only indigenous guides who know the offbeat routes, speak the native language and will introduce travelers to the local lifestyles and customs.

Trips are graded by level of difficulty. Grade I includes walking and easy hiking, with little or no camping. Grade II involves moderate hiking and some deluxe camping. Grade III entails strenuous hiking, high altitude, steep slopes and more rustic camping.

Travelers Conservation Trust
Established in 1986 by Wildland Adventures to encourage culturally and environmentally responsible tourism, the Travelers Conservation Trust provides a Code of Ethics for nature and culture travelers and sponsors local projects by which travelers can contribute to local conservation and community development projects in host countries.

Kurt Kutay, President & Founder
Wildland Adventures, Inc.

Kurt Kutay is president and founder of Wildland Adventures, Inc., an adventure travel company based in Seattle, Washington.

Kurt’s interest in exploring and preserving the world's unprotected wildlands began over 30 years ago with a family home-stay with relatives in Turkey in 1968 followed by an overland backpack trip through Central and South America in 1975.

After earning a graduate degree in Natural Resource Management from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources, Kurt worked for the International Division of the U.S. National Park Service organizing educational tours of U.S. and Canadian National Parks for conservation leaders from around the world. He subsequently moved to Costa Rica where he worked for the National Park Service to develop a management plan for a tropical marine park.

Since 1980, Kurt has designed and led adventure trips throughout the world, ultimately founding Wildland Adventures in 1986. Recognized by Conde’ Nast Traveler Magazine as one of the world’s best ecotourism outfitters, Wildland Adventures offers authentic nature and culture explorations that support conservation and community development.

Kurt was a founding member of the Board of Directors of The Ecotourism Society and the International Galapagos Tour Operators Association. He currently serves on the Board of the Maasai Environmental Resource Coalition. He is also director of the Travelers Conservation Trust, a non-profit organization he founded that contributes proceeds from Wildland Adventures to local conservation and community development projects.

He has published numerous articles on ecotourism for popular magazines and professional journals, co-authored a chapter on Adventure Travel in South America for Fodor’s guide books, has contributed two chapters in an academic book entitled, “Resident People and National Parks,” published by the University of Arizona Press.
